Our Lead Custody Officer provides security functions within and around the perimeter of the facility. Responsible for assisting the Shift Supervisor by maintaining proper security and safety standards for all patients. Makes security checks and inspections of the entire working environment and corrects or reports to the proper authority all shortcomings and deficiencies. Must prepare written reports of daily activities, disciplinary infractions, accidents and incidents. Must develop and maintain a professional rapport with all patients, supervisors and other employees in the working environment.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) or more years of experience working in a correctional or secure treatment facility.
- One (1) supervisory experience preferred.
- In addition, must meet any facility/state specific educational/training requirements.
- Must possess a valid driver's license specific to the state of employment.
- Certification as a Correctional Officer.
ResponsibilitiesResponsible for providing leadership and direction in the completion of assigned tasks, "hands on" training through skill demonstration and role modeling, oversight of the unit and staff under their leadership.Collaborates with all staff to ensure that proper field training techniques are implemented and utilized effectively. Ensures that all training documentation in completed and submitted to the Human Resource Department as required.Responds to unusual occurrences. Facilitates prompt and appropriate assistance to residents in the event of injury, illness or emotional trauma.Monitors staff interaction with residents. Evaluates resident behavior and interactions; directs or takes steps to diffuse critical situations.Directs the work of other employees. This may include the evaluating job performance, employee training/development, promoting and proposing any disciplinary action, including termination.Reviews post orders and assures that all policy and procedures including emergency management are in place and staff are properly trained as required.Monitors search procedures, monitors resident movement, resolves resident complaints; provides immediate corrective action to security staff in their designated area when required.Gives primary guidance on situational problems; making referrals for more complex problems. Responds to patient problems, complaints and needs when required.Prepares and submits records and reports as assigned by management without error in accordance with facility policy and time frames. Maintains daily logs as required.Maintains security of an assigned post (as defined by the facility), remaining alert at all times and taking the necessary action to prevent escapes. Monitors patient activities and intervening as needed to control disruptive and/or violent behaviors.Conducts formal and informal counts of patients and reports any discrepancies to the appropriate personnel.Responds to emergency calls in patient areas to de-escalate aggressive behaviors, control fights and riots, prevent escapes and assists clinical staff to prevent harm or injury from violent patients utilizing established aggression control techniques. Participates in searching patient areas for contraband and other unauthorized items.Continuously monitors and inspects the Facility environment for escape risks and/or hazardous conditions. This includes; fences, doors, windows, ceilings, etc.Makes sanitation and safety inspections of facility and contents, grounds and vehicles, and corrects or reports shortcomings and deficiencies.Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.Perform other duties as assigned.
